Gary & Patty
You know that it is in the valleys of our lives that we find the most fertilizer. This will only make you stronger in the Lord. Your whole family is and will remain in our thoughts and prayers.
Keep smilin!! Prayer works.Comment by Larry & Mary April 27, 2007 @ 8:36 pm
Hey there Gary, I got this from my nephew Chris. He and his family have suffered through the loss of their mother and wife ( my sister-in-law) in the past year. He found this to be of great inspiration and direction to look for the positive. I send it your way to hopefully do the same.MikeA little girl had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful red haired, freckle faced image of innocence. It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the earth it has no time to flow down the spout. We all stood there under the awning and just inside the door of the Wal-Mart.

We waited, some patiently, others irritated because nature messed up their hurried day. I am always mesmerized by rainfall. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child came pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day.

The little voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in “Mom, let’s run through the rain,” she said.

“What?” Mom asked.

“Let ’s run through the rain!” She repeated.

“No, honey. We’ll wait until it slows down a bit,” Mom replied.

This young child waited about another minute and repeated: “Mom, let’s run through the rain,”

“We’ll get soaked if we do,” Mom said.

“No, we won’t, Mom. That’s not what you said this morning,” the young girl said as she tugged at her Mom’s arm.

This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?

“Don’t you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, ‘If God can get us through this,
he can get us through anything!”

The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I swear you couldn’t hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes.

Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say. Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child’s life. A time when innocent trust can be nurtured so that it will bloom into faith.

“Honey, you are absolutely right. Let’s run through the rain. If GOD let’s us get wet, well maybe we just needed washing,” Mom said.

Then off they ran. We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they darted past the cars and yes, through the puddles. They held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars.

And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing.

Circumstances or people can take away your material possessions, they can take away your money, and they can take away your health. But no one can ever take away your precious memories…So, don’t forget to make time and take the opportunities to make memories everyday. To everything
there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven.

A friend sent this to me to remind me of life. Hope you enjoy it.

I HOPE YOU STILL TAKE THE TIME TO RUN THROUGH THE RAIN.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them. Send this to the people you’ll never forget and remember to also send it to the person who sent it to you. It’s a short message to let them know that you’ll never forget them.

If you don’t send it to anyone, it means you’re in a hurry.

Take the time to live!!!

Keep in touch with your friends, you never know when
you’ll need each other — and don’t forget to run in the rain!

I talked to my parents over the weekend and my dad told me what your family is going through. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Scott and I will be praying for you. Let us know if there is something we can do in addition to our prayers.

Hey Gary & Patty!EXPECT A MIRACLE!!!! I’m praying, praying, praying for you guys, and don’t forget about the epiphany I had. John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” And now, for something completely different…..(you’ve heard it before but it’s STILL funny the millionth time around!)
A tortoise…visibly shaken and upset…
comes to the police station and tells the
cop at the desk, “I’ve just been attacked
by a marauding band of snails!” The cop
says, “Okay, try to calm down, take a
deep breath, and tell me the details.”
So the tortoise says, “I don’t know! It
all happened so FAST!”
Har de Har Har Har!! Couldn’t help myself. And YES, I’m still getting loads of enjoyment out of my little container of FLARP. Best birthday gift I’ve ever received.Love,

Leslie

Gary & Patty.
Just heard about your diagoniss. All I can say is that you will be in our prayers and don’t give up hope. I was glad to read that you like your doctors, I think that is a big plus. We are here whatever you need. Chris.Comment by chris mason May 4, 2007 @ 2:21 pm
Gary & Patty,
God just keeps giving you opportunities to give Him the glory…you have lived your life of faith that way consistently and I expect you will go through this new opportunity with that trademark (and God-given) Gary humility. My first thoughts as I heard this news was what a servant you are to family, friends, the church and our Lord. Gary…serving the Lord together with you and Patty was a highlight of my life and Sue and I miss you and SBC very much. As we are moving to the Overland Park, Kansas area with my company…we will remember you in prayer and will trust God to provide you and Patty with wisdom and strength. Thanks to Alicia for this website to keep up. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” By the way, I am curious as to look without a beard…please post lots of pics! Ha! Also…the child picture looks a lot like Sarah. Perhaps I’ll see some of you at Andrea Friederichs wedding. Until we meet again.Comment by Brent & Sue Hall May 5, 2007 @ 7:42 pm

Gary, I was sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It sounds as though you have a good plan and competent people around you. Of course, there is always the Great Physician who is not unaware of your situation. You and your family will be in my prayers. When you are well again, we’ll get the band back together. Yo Gary & Patty!Gary, when you DO get your band back together (Argyle Schlocky?!…what’s up with THAT?!), perhaps you guys could do a “Sweatin’ to the Groovy 70’s” workout cd. I, for one, would rush right out to the store to buy it. Bought myself a dandy scale (first one I’ve had in over 15 years), and am officially underway with “Get Fit For Gary”. Got quite a few pledges so far and expect more folks to jump on-board. My news director here at the station is pledging A DOLLAR A POUND! Boy, is HE gonna have to cough up the bucks! Can’t wait to be able to fit into those salmon pink, California bell bottom, hip-hugger, corduroy Levi’s. I’m prayin’ for you. I’ll leave you with this odd little song that my mom had to sing to the upperclassmen when she was a freshman at ‘Iowa State Teachers’ College’ (now ‘The University of Northern Iowa’)in Cedar Falls, Iowa…..A horse and a flea and three blind mice,
sat at a table shooting dice,
when all at once the horse fell off!
“Oops!” said the flea there’s a horse on me!
Boom-boom ain’t it great to be craaazy,
boom-boom ain’t it great to be craaazy,
silly and foolish all day long…
boom-boom ain’t it great to be craaazy!

Hello Gary, Patty and family,
Yes I have been in contact with Thrivent Finanacial for Lutherans( for every 3 dollars they will match 1). Yes your Lutheran Social Services family will like to help run a benefit for you. Others that I have talked to would also like to help and many would like to pitch in.
The game plan is to find a place to hold a benefit and for you to let me know possible dates the end of July or beginning of August.
With the help of family, friends and co-workers we will do wonderful things with your blessing.
Take care, LauraComment by Laura Smith May 11, 2007 @ 6:34 pm
Hey there Gary! I am so sorry you are going through all this. My Brother Bill called and told me and then sent me your site. Do you remember helping me with Jessica, the girl Kevin and I took in for a while? You were my rock during all of that!!! Along, of course, my first rock being God!! A couple of years ago I even “hunted” Jessica down and called her. She sounded good, but when I have tried to call recently, the number
is disconnected. I don’t know if Bill has told you
about our brother Buzz. In the last 4 or 5 years he’s had a quadruple by-pass, the next year he survived pancreatic cancer, then colon and liver cancer. It’s been tough on him, as you well know but Praise God Buzz is still doing well. He and wife are Christians and are devoted to their church PTL! God is good and not a respecter of persons!! By the way, I’ve been on steriods for years off and on and they really mess with your mind, just so you know it’s not all in your head!

Have been keeping updated through this blog and want you to know how much we think about you and the family as we pray for your treatments and peace of mind. After taking care of my parents for several years with treatments and surgeries, I know how precious and comforting scripture can become. God has appointed each day for us and then he helps us get through the tough ones and rejoice in the good ones. You are prayed for daily. If we can do something more for you please let us know. Gary, Patti, Alicia, Sarah, Zachary, and Ray,
The storm is in sight and you’re all in the boat wondering if it is time to panic or not. Remember who is asleep in the stern, worrying about nothing. Whenever the storm gets here in a rage, each of you will react indifferent ways. When you worry the boat might sink, it will be easy to think others are not doing what they should. Don’t get distracted by the action or lack of action in others. Remember who sleeps in the stern. He doesn’t sleep because He doesn’t care. He sleeps because He isn’t worried. He knows the storm won’t last forever because He won’t allow it to. He will only allow it to rage long enough for you to recognize your need to trutst Him during the storm. Then there will be peace. You’ll still be in the boat and on the water, but at peace. Trust the One sleeping in the stern.
I, as are many, am on the shore praying for all of you who are in the boat.MikeComment by Mike and Sandi Meyer May 23, 2007 @ 1:29 pm

Dear Gary,
We just learned of your health struggle. You and your dear family will be in our prayers as you fight the good fight. God’s mercies are new every morning!
Some things that take place in life are beyond our human understanding. The hills and valleys are all part of the journey toward our destination. It’s so comforting to know the Lord is with us always and hears our every sigh.
“Hold on loose”, Gary, and peace will be yours throughout this time of trial.
Gary, you and Patty have a beautiful family. The photos on your website show the bond of love you have with one another and the joy of living you have experienced so far. You are blest.
Miracles occur every day with advances in modern medicine. May God give you full healing!
With love,

Bonjour, Mr. Bonjour!I am a very old internet buddy of Alicia’s. My father was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma with an occult primary back in 1998. They removed an egg sized tumor from his throat as well as a major salivary gland and 7 nodes. I remember being scared when he told me that “squamous cell” cancer is a fast-spreading kind and the doctors didn’t know where its primary source was in his body. They basically radiated his entire neck over and over crossing their fingers that that’s where it all began. My dad had the same attitude that you have displayed on your blog – if it’s God’s time, then Hallelujah! If you ask my father today, he will tell you that God healed him the day after he was diagnosed. I’m praying that God will heal you in the same way he healed my dad, and that you will have a wonderful testimony because of it. Hang in there!Comment by Formerly LeslietheAngel, now LeslietheMom May 26, 2007 @ 11:22 pm
Gary and Patty,
Hi Guys! This is one of your long lost second cousins checking in from So.Cal. Georgie and I are so saddened to hear of your illness and courageous battle to overcome it. My mom, your
great aunt Thelma, always had a special place in her heart for your family. You and your brother were only two feet tall when I last saw you running around the farm in Mt Carrol some 54 years ago. Your recent photo looks like you must have been cultivating that beard ever since then. Hang in there cuz, it sounds as if God is indeed with you.

Hey Gary, I didn’t hear if you went mushrooming this spring or not. We have had a hard time finding “the spot” here in Western Oregon. On Memorial Day we tried the east side of the Cascades and found some! First time in three years. How did your Memorial Day go? Are you able to cast a line? How are things going this week? You are on our church prayer list, and I am praying everyday for that miracle! Love PamComment by your sister pam May 29, 2007 @ 4:29 pm
Bonjour Family…
I just heard about everything from Alicia when inquiring about Gary’s beard on Facebook. Quite and odd place to catch up on the news of life, but hey look at it this way. Just one more prayer is going up for you all the way from Indiana. Keep up the good fight. Oh, and I also want to be the first in line to see pictures of you without a beard! It is your trademark, but we all have to know what you look like without it! Reading the comments and your blog today has been quite the encouragement to me. Please take care and I will be sure to keep you in my prayers.Comment by Bethany Larimore May 30, 2007 @ 1:19 pm

Dear Gary,It is so good to hear that you are singing hymns of praise to the Lord! What a witness to your brothers and sisters to let them know your faith, hope and trust is built on Jesus Christ, your Rock. The Lord bends His ear and hears your songs sung to His glory. And, there is nothing more soothing and strengthening to your soul, mind and body than giving thanks to your Creator, Savior, and Enlightener.Keep a song in your heart, Gary, each new day. As you continue to sing, you will find comfort and relief. This will see you through.

We’re thinking of across the miles, Gary, and praying for you and Patty and your dear family. May God give you complete healing.

Just wanted to let you know I was thinking of you and tell you that I had a stem cell transplant 13 years ago in Iowa City for non-Hodgkins lymphoma. My brother had his transplant 17 years ago. I read the comments on your website – brought back a lot of memories. I know when I was going through all of this it helped me to hear about success stories. Hi Gary. Don’t get too comfy on medical leave, WE NEED YOU! I have been selling raffle tickets for your benefit Aug 18th and everyone has been so gracious and has asked about you. You have alot of prayers and supporters that you have worked with at LSSI and the folks at DCFS-Sterling office bought the last of my tickets without hesitation! When the other staff wanted tickets, I got them to give me their money and they trusted me enough to send their ticket stubs in the mail. I gave them your website. I think I should go into the sales field, what do you think? ha-ha. Geez, I can’t imagine you without your beard. The past 14 year’s I’ve known you I’ve never seen you without it. Have fun fishing. Just don’t go canoeing. Remember when we took the summer program kids and ended up having to paddle seven miles extra as we missed our exit…that was fun but brutal. Well, I just wanted to drop by to say hi in case you have been checking your messages. I say a prayer for you and your family every night. Take care Gary and stay strong. I believe God will never give you more than you can handle and you will beat this!! Hope to see you soon. Your pal, MaryComment by Mary Shull July 28, 2007 @ 5:49 pm
Dear Gary and Family,This was sent to me by a dear friend whose daughter is battling cancer. I thought it appropriate to share with you and your family during your time of need:From the bible Chapters 38 – 41, where God made His appearance before Job and answered all of Job’s questions by answering none of his questions. Job was brought to contentment without ever knowing the facts of his case. God’s test of Job would only work if Job did not have any idea about the reason why he was suffering. Job had to be kept clueless if he was to trust God and learn to love Him above all else. Even after all was said and done and the story was finished, Job still lived in the dark and had to walk by naked faith. Job was never able to say, “Oh, I understand why God did that, I see.” All he was able to say was “All I see is God” and that was enough.

Many times we understand why we suffer and we can learn valuable lessons that build our character and our hope. However, there are those times when God never tells us why we suffer, and for the life of us we cannot figure out the reasons for such pain. It is then, like Job, we enter into the sacred place of naked faith. There, our prayers though weak and feeble, should never ask for reasons why, but should cry out “let me see God” and that will be enough. I pray for all of you who suffer that you experience God’s presence.

God bless you and your family!

With great sincerity,

Silvia and Steve Hudzik

Hey, Gary! Thanks for the rich humor you demonstrated with your hair pictures. You look great any way you do it. However, I liked the daring look of two braids best. We’re thinking of you and will continue to uphold you in prayer.CurtComment by Curt August 7, 2007 @ 3:50 pm
Dear Gary and Patty,
I just wanted to let you know that my prayers and thoughts are with you. Krystal lead me to your website when we discovered that my mother was diagnosed with multiplemyeloma today.
(I am Kystal’s Aunt Sandy, we met at the shower and wedding)
I was able to visit some sites that you had listed to help me understand this disease. We will find out next Wednesday what stage she is in.
I wanted to let you know that reading your bible passages on your site brought me comfort and peace. Once again you are in our thoughts and prayers.SandyComment by Sandy Mennenga August 9, 2007 @ 9:46 pm
Hi Gary:Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I will see you in savanna on the 18th….Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you….I have thought of how much you have taught all of us at LSSI over the years. You have touched so many lives….I still use your name to gain trust in Carroll County…they figure if I know you I must be okay…that is a testiment to your outstanding work and graciousness. Take careTammy

HI Gary: Good luck in your challenge with dealing with your illness. Looks like you still have a great sense of humor with the photos of you removing your beard. From ol Ben Withhart I get the scoop about people like you and you never know what gets tossed out at us from the universe to confound us. Best wishes for you and your family and friends to enjoy many good times as you face this rocky road. Keep on truckin, Grant WiegertComment by Grant Wiegert August 13, 2007 @ 5:44 pm

WOW, What a day. Today I witnessed the Lord God Almighty do a miracle. Gary, it is amazing how many people your life has touched. I saw so much love and community support at your benefit this afternoon. It could only be a “God Thing”. You know what I mean? You guys are greatly loved and appreciated. Hope you have a good trip to Chi-town tomorrow.Love ya’

Hi Gary,
I went to help set up for your benefit on Friday and ended up buying one of Mary Cox’s German Chocolate cakes in advance for Mike’s birthday on Saturday. It was a great cake and I didn’t have to bake one myself. I am sorry we missed the benefit and didn’t get a chance to see you in person or meet your family. We had prior plans to be out of town for his birthday. It sounds like it was a great success and I am happy you had a great time. My thoughts and prayers remain with you and your family and I just know your transplant will be a success!! God speed. Take care Gary. Hey Uncle Gary — don’t know if you are sitting around reading blog comments in the hospital, but I figure you’ll eventually read this … we are all thinking of you up here in the frozen north… the other frozen north, that is, the one on the other side of the ocean :). I hope we get a chance to see you next month when we visit. But I hear you might be a little busy! You’re awesome Uncle Gary. Keep it up!wiht love,

Hey Gary! The music at the benefit was great! I got so inspired by it that I decided to write a song to my sister for her birthday and sent it along with her gift. Thought I’d share it with you:A Birthday Song to My Dearest Sister
(to the tune of “Happy Birthday”)Happy Birthday to you!
Like me you are fifty-two
Happy birthday EKM (a.k.a. Kath)
Happy Birthday on Christmas stationary!

Now, honestly, is that good or what?
I guess I ought to explain she is 11 months younger than me. So we’re the same age for a while every year. Also, I didn’t have any kind of birthday stationary. But I did have some Christmas sheets with poinsettias, greenery, and red ribbons on it.

Hi Gary,
Doug and I were so glad we were able to see you at the August 18 Church event! Your bright smile was the same as ever and it was good to give you a hug. The time with family was very special and it was nice to see Patty and your wonderful “grown-up” children. We spent some time with your mom and dad and Randy, Alicia and Tony last Sunday. God works in mysterious ways and we know His Plan is always right. Keep the faith, Gary, and know that we are close in spirit praying for you to be healed by our Divine Physician. Hi Gary,
I don’t know if my hospital card got thru as it gave me one of those weird page error things that only Bill Gates would know what it means. I suppose you’re tired of hearing things like, “Boy, a guy will do anything to get off work!” & that sort of stuff. It is almost true that the only time we get off is when we are sick. I will say this, I think of how you had to zoom around on crutches as a kid and while we were out there hunting rabbits with shotguns, here is Gary with a bow! Alot of trials in your life. We are glad to hear the news that you are getting thru this one.
I send up a prayer every day.
CalvinComment by Calvin Lego September 19, 2007 @ 6:33 am
I pray Gary that you, “..therefore, in view of God’s mercy, offer your body as a living sacrifice because it is holy and pleasing to Him. This is your reasonable worship. Be not conformed to the world’s way of thinking about circumstances but be transformed by the renewing of your mind in Christ Jesus. Then you will be able to test and approve what His will is. His holy, perfect, and pleasing will.” (romans 12:1-2)Amen.I send my love and prayers for healing in Jesus name. Amen.Sincerely,

Tom Blair

Good Morning Gary,My computer got one of those ETD’s (Electronically Transmitted Diseases) but got it fixed so here I am back. I could just picture you “staring down a slushie” waiting for the anti-nausea meds to kick in. Those mouth sores must be not too much fun but I am sure they will go away once the body starts to kick in on all 8 cylinders again. You’ll be better long before T-Day. Keep on keeping on. If you weren’t meant to be here, you’d be gone by now.Comment by Calvin Lego September 25, 2007 @ 6:40 am
