We waited, some patiently, others irritated because nature messed up their hurried day. I am always mesmerized by rainfall. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child came pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day.
The little voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in “Mom, let’s run through the rain,” she said.
“What?” Mom asked.
“Let ’s run through the rain!” She repeated.
“No, honey. We’ll wait until it slows down a bit,” Mom replied.
This young child waited about another minute and repeated: “Mom, let’s run through the rain,”
“We’ll get soaked if we do,” Mom said.
“No, we won’t, Mom. That’s not what you said this morning,” the young girl said as she tugged at her Mom’s arm.
This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?
“Don’t you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, ‘If God can get us through this,
he can get us through anything!”
The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I swear you couldn’t hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes.
Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say. Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child’s life. A time when innocent trust can be nurtured so that it will bloom into faith.
“Honey, you are absolutely right. Let’s run through the rain. If GOD let’s us get wet, well maybe we just needed washing,” Mom said.
Then off they ran. We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they darted past the cars and yes, through the puddles. They held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars.
And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing.
Circumstances or people can take away your material possessions, they can take away your money, and they can take away your health. But no one can ever take away your precious memories…So, don’t forget to make time and take the opportunities to make memories everyday. To everything
there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven.
A friend sent this to me to remind me of life. Hope you enjoy it.
I HOPE YOU STILL TAKE THE TIME TO RUN THROUGH THE RAIN.
They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them. Send this to the people you’ll never forget and remember to also send it to the person who sent it to you. It’s a short message to let them know that you’ll never forget them.
If you don’t send it to anyone, it means you’re in a hurry.
Take the time to live!!!
Keep in touch with your friends, you never know when
you’ll need each other — and don’t forget to run in the rain!

A tortoise…visibly shaken and upset…
comes to the police station and tells the
cop at the desk, “I’ve just been attacked
by a marauding band of snails!” The cop
says, “Okay, try to calm down, take a
deep breath, and tell me the details.”
So the tortoise says, “I don’t know! It
all happened so FAST!”
Har de Har Har Har!! Couldn’t help myself. And YES, I’m still getting loads of enjoyment out of my little container of FLARP. Best birthday gift I’ve ever received.Love,

God just keeps giving you opportunities to give Him the glory…you have lived your life of faith that way consistently and I expect you will go through this new opportunity with that trademark (and God-given) Gary humility. My first thoughts as I heard this news was what a servant you are to family, friends, the church and our Lord. Gary…serving the Lord together with you and Patty was a highlight of my life and Sue and I miss you and SBC very much. As we are moving to the Overland Park, Kansas area with my company…we will remember you in prayer and will trust God to provide you and Patty with wisdom and strength. Thanks to Alicia for this website to keep up. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” By the way, I am curious as to look without a beard…please post lots of pics! Ha! Also…the child picture looks a lot like Sarah. Perhaps I’ll see some of you at Andrea Friederichs wedding. Until we meet again.Comment by Brent & Sue Hall May 5, 2007 @ 7:42 pm

Yes I have been in contact with Thrivent Finanacial for Lutherans( for every 3 dollars they will match 1). Yes your Lutheran Social Services family will like to help run a benefit for you. Others that I have talked to would also like to help and many would like to pitch in.
The game plan is to find a place to hold a benefit and for you to let me know possible dates the end of July or beginning of August.
With the help of family, friends and co-workers we will do wonderful things with your blessing.

It’s been tough on him, as you well know but Praise God Buzz is still doing well. He and wife are Christians and are devoted to their church PTL! God is good and not a respecter of persons!! After taking care of my parents for several years with treatments and surgeries, I know how precious and comforting scripture can become. God has appointed each day for us and then he helps us get through the tough ones and rejoice in the good ones. You are prayed for daily. If we can do something more for you please let us know. The storm is in sight and you’re all in the boat wondering if it is time to panic or not. Remember who is asleep in the stern, worrying about nothing. Whenever the storm gets here in a rage, each of you will react indifferent ways. When you worry the boat might sink, it will be easy to think others are not doing what they should. Don’t get distracted by the action or lack of action in others. Remember who sleeps in the stern. He doesn’t sleep because He doesn’t care. He sleeps because He isn’t worried. He knows the storm won’t last forever because He won’t allow it to. He will only allow it to rage long enough for you to recognize your need to trutst Him during the storm. Then there will be peace. You’ll still be in the boat and on the water, but at peace. Trust the One sleeping in the stern.
I, as are many, am on the shore praying for all of you who are in the boat.MikeComment by Mike and Sandi Meyer May 23, 2007 @ 1:29 pm

We just learned of your health struggle. You and your dear family will be in our prayers as you fight the good fight. God’s mercies are new every morning!
Some things that take place in life are beyond our human understanding. The hills and valleys are all part of the journey toward our destination. It’s so comforting to know the Lord is with us always and hears our every sigh.
“Hold on loose”, Gary, and peace will be yours throughout this time of trial.
Gary, you and Patty have a beautiful family. The photos on your website show the bond of love you have with one another and the joy of living you have experienced so far. You are blest.

Hi Guys! This is one of your long lost second cousins checking in from So.Cal. Georgie and I are so saddened to hear of your illness and courageous battle to overcome it. My mom, your
great aunt Thelma, always had a special place in her heart for your family. You and your brother were only two feet tall when I last saw you running around the farm in Mt Carrol some 54 years ago. Your recent photo looks like you must have been cultivating that beard ever since then. Hang in there cuz, it sounds as if God is indeed with you.

I’m not sure if you remember me from when I taught at the Mt.Carroll Elementary School. I taught second grade and remember seeing you around school every so often. Just wanted to let you know I was thinking of you and tell you that I had a stem cell transplant 13 years ago in Iowa City for non-Hodgkins lymphoma. My brother had his transplant 17 years ago. I read the comments on your website – brought back a lot of memories. I know when I was going through all of this it helped me to hear about success stories. Hope our stories help you and your family. My husband was a wonderful caretaker so if your wife ever needs some one to listen he would gladly do that. Take care and don’t hesitate to email us if you ever need to talk to someone who has been there, done that.Comment by Ann Peterson July 17, 2007 @ 7:33 pm

Many times we understand why we suffer and we can learn valuable lessons that build our character and our hope. However, there are those times when God never tells us why we suffer, and for the life of us we cannot figure out the reasons for such pain. It is then, like Job, we enter into the sacred place of naked faith. There, our prayers though weak and feeble, should never ask for reasons why, but should cry out “let me see God” and that will be enough. I pray for all of you who suffer that you experience God’s presence.
God bless you and your family!

I suppose you’re tired of hearing things like, “Boy, a guy will do anything to get off work!” & that sort of stuff. It is almost true that the only time we get off is when we are sick.
