Randy posting from Iowa. Gary and Patty had Sunday dinner with Uncle Ronnie, Gloria, and Randy Yaiser at a restaurant in Chicago. Gary ate his best meal since the transplant started and is reported to be in good spirits! He has a meeting with his doctor tomorrow. There is a possibility he will be returning to Savanna after the appointment. Blood platelets continue to be low.A transfusion might be in order.

Dad was able to be released from the hospital yesterday (day 20). He and mom are staying in the hospital-provided apartment a few blocks away. He will need to stay close by until his platelet count goes up. He will get a platelet transfusion tomorrow if his counts drop below 11. Today they are at 16 and yesterday they were at 23. The falling numbers mean his body’s platelet production has not bounced back from the effects of the chemotherapy yet. This is fairly normal though, and it could be a few days before the platelets come back on their own. Normal levels are 15-40. They plan to go home on Monday if it is obvious that no additional transfusions will be needed.

Pray for platelets and continued resistance to infections!

It looks like Gary is going to be released from the hospital tomorrow, but just to the apartments a few blocks from the hospital. His bone marrow is not producing platelets, a common occurrence that straightens up with time. The doctor wants him up and moving around but very close to medical facilities. I will be going back to Chicago tomorrow and stay at the apartment with him through the weekend. The weather forecast for Chicago is sunny skies and in the 70’s. The apartment is in a nice area to walk and enjoy these wonderful early fall days.

Not much new to report.  Things are going well and the doctors are pleased with Dad’s progress.  He can drink fine but is still having difficulty swallowing food.  He needs to be able to eat before he can be released. However, Thursday is tentatively the day he gets to leave.  He will stay in Chicago for a few days for tests and checkups before going home.
