Sorry the hear that Gary may have additional health issues. I will continue to pray for your entire family and especially for your doctor visit on Monday.
Comment by Tim Goss January 6, 2008 @ 6:56 pmI’m happy to hear that things worked out so well yesterday. And how nice that you were able to sample the crazy weather we’ve been having out here this week. I woke up late on Monday and as I stepped out the door I though “I know I slept in, but I didn’t know I slept in until March!”
Comment by Joshua Cunningham January 8, 2008 @ 10:02 pmAnyway, the family and I are keeping you in our prayers. God bless!
Gary,
Really glad to hear that things aren’t as bad as they sounded in your last update. I am going to make you keep your promise to take me deer hunting THIS year. Hopefully by then we will have moved to the frozen north around Peoria. All of our prayers are with both you and Patty.
Hang in there Little Cuz.

Hello Gary and Family,
Comment by Laura Smith January 17, 2008 @ 11:29 amIt just seems like yesterday that the husband and family & friends were playing good music at the Church of God. I am thinking happy thoughts and saying a PRAYER.
Also it was great to see you doing good works at the schools over the last few weeks.
Take care, Laura Smith and family
Hi Gary….hang in there. I’m really praying for you. I believe in god and should probably pray every day…know that I have prayed more with you getting sick. I admire your courage, strength, and your illness has led me to my knees to pray for you because it seems like bad things always happen to those who are the nicest to others! God bless Gary and know you are thought of. Love, Mary

Monday night in Massbach and 7 to 9 inches of fresh snow! I’m too old for this…Let’s plan on some ice tea and telling some stories while sitting on the front porch. Looking forward to you coming home soon.

Hey Gary -
I just want you to know that I think about you a lot. I know things are rough right now and I wish I could ease the pain for you. I want you to imagine a sick child sitting on his mother’s lap. She holds him close and whispers calming words in his ear as she rubs his back – feeling his pain and wishing it were her pain instead. Picture that and remember that God is holding you just that way.
Peace -

Comment by Peggy Carey January 22, 2008 @ 10:01 amPatty,
Mom is spending some time here with us (in Indiana) and we check up on you and Gary each day on this website. We are gripped by the depths of suffering that you are all in the middle of and we are praying that God will pour his peace over you and his arm of healing will hold Gary, raising him up to better days.
We know that God is right there beside you and we are too, in our hearts.

Dear Gary,
Comment by norma favor February 4, 2008 @ 1:05 pmI am your wifes aunt. I live in B.C with my daughter Renee (Your wife’s cousin) Even though we have not written, we think of you often and pray for you. You may not be aware that churches all over U.S. and Canada are praying for you. You have made it so bravely for so long. May God continue to give strength to you and your family.
Love to all of you.
In a lighter vein: We have had so much snow here in Surrey. Since we are in the Japanese current we usually have mild weather. Right now it is snowing buckets and has been on and off for a month. In Idaho, your cousins have had 40 inches of snow.
May you all be spared the bad weather.
Please keep the information coming. We do read the blog.
Love Aunt Norma Jean
Hope your doing well today! Our area is shut down due to snow. We were told yesterday we could get 20 inches!! It is falling at about an inch an hour here. We will send it your way, might be pretty to watch out your big window!

Romans 5:1-5
1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.

Comment by Paul Fecke February 8, 2008 @ 9:43 amSo glad to hear you’re out of the ICU! After tracking the events of the last few weeks on a daily basis, I am reminded just how much we all take for granted. Just to be able to walk, swallow or even take a deap breath. Everything we have or are able to do in this world is a precious gift. Your courage though all this has been an inspiration to me. God Bless!
Well, sounds like you are doing better. Will be praying for the cookie test…at least it should taste good. Take care!
Comment by Randy & Lynn Cole February 8, 2008 @ 12:53 pmRandy & Lynn Cole
Hey Gary! Great to hear you’re out of ICU! You’ve missed out on a wonderful snowstorm. Spent all day yesterday digging out of 13 inches on my driveway and then digging out my pickup that the snow removal guys down at the school decided to bury up to my windows. It’s Friday afternoon and no one has cleared the church yet. I parked on the street and waded in up to my knees. More is coming tonight and tomorrow. I hope it’s cleared by Sunday morning Friends Day.

Comment by Aunt Thelma & Uncle George February 9, 2008 @ 6:26 pmAunt Thelma and Uncle George
Just received a card from Susie in the mail. She gave us your website. Didn’t know about it so now we’ll join in as well so you can know we’re thinking of YOU! Everything in Utah is just cold and lots of snow, snow, snow. Probably pretty similar to Illinois. We have been busy as ever working away. Delta in Salt Lake City won the pretigious “Triple Crown Award” which is a safety award. We didn’t have any aircraft damages, a very low number of on the job injuries, and the best on-time record for one month of all the airports in the US. So we had “box lunches” for everyone on Wednesday. We had 500 for the day shift and 300 for the evening shift. That was quite a day – pretty long! It looks like Delta Air Lines may be going to merge. It is all over the news but don’t know anything really until it happens. The employees will probably know and then the media will know and report on it an hour later. We love you and know that we are praying for you Gary. All our love to you too Patty. :)
Comment by Pete & Connie February 9, 2008 @ 7:28 pmHi Gary,
I’m so glad to hear you are feeling and doing well. I check your website every week and lately i’ve been a little worried with all the ups and downs. But i know that you are in God’s hands and He is in Control. I pray that you stay strong in body and in the Word. You were always an encouragement to me through your steadfast faith and devotion to Christ while still doing everything to expand His kingdom. You are a blessing and I won’t stop praying for you.
Psalm 86:1-10
p.s. i’ll see you in may :)

Hi Gary & Patty (& the rest of the family reading this) – We’re glad to hear that good progress is being made. You’ve really been going through some rough stuff! But it sounds like they have a top notch staff at that hospital. Thank God! It’s amazing what the medical profession can do these days. Just wish they could fast forward through all of these tough times and get you back home real soon. Love & Prayers – Vern & Linda
Comment by Linda Anderson February 11, 2008 @ 9:23 pmHi Gary: I keep following your progress (the good and not-so-good news). Keep going forward and before you know, you will be back in Savanna where you belong. Take care and keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

Hi Gary,
We’re so very glad that you are feeling better and getting stronger every day! It’s brighter now as we look forward to Springtime and that means renewal is on the way. You have been in our thoughts and prayers. After reading each report posted on your website, our computer’s cursor follows your smile line on your youthful photo shown at the top page before we close. It is a must! We want to see that smile again! Even though you have been tested much in the past months, your inner trust in God’s plan has given so many of us a hopeful spirit also. May God strengthen you and give continued healing, Gary, as you go forward in faith.
With love and prayers,

Comment by Ellen Williams February 20, 2008 @ 7:38 amAbout Gary and his attitude towards the doctor and others. I remember when Nana was undergoing treatment for chemo she became very hostile at times and verbally not nice towards others. I always believed that the steroids used to fight reactions were the cause.

Hey Mr. Bonjour, I hope you pull through this, I’ll be praying for you.
Comment by Benjamin Dye February 20, 2008 @ 12:37 pmI am a fan of Gary
Who is no longer hairy
He is one of a kind
Who was never behind
In his count of his fish
That would fill up his dish
Gary has many a friend
Of which there is no end
For now we must say
To Gary today
Get up and keep walking
Soon we will be talking
We friends are most proud
Comment by Bill Briggs February 20, 2008 @ 9:21 pmThat God has allowed
For us to remember
Gary in September
On the Mississippi banks
With a great deal of thanks
For Gary is healing
And we all are feeling
The power of our Lord
Who we know has restored
Our good friend Gary
Who will some day be hairy
We all sure love Gary
roses are red, violets are blue.
if bill briggs can write a poem.
i sure can too.
hope you are feeling well,
hope you are feeling fine,
keep walking and swallowing
you’ll be home in no time
gary to me it seems,
you’ve got this timed just right
when you get back, the sunny beams
will make sure there’s no snow in sight
so get well quick,
get well fast
and soon, the time you’ve been sick
will be long passed.
then you can break out the rod
and break out the reel
get some bass and some cod
and make us a real big meal!
(I think my poem wins, you be the judge.)
Comment by Beth February 21, 2008 @ 6:54 pmGary and Patty…read to the end. Have fun with this…contemplate on whatever helps. I wonder if anyone else out there has ideas for you other than to tell me to stop writing!

An Angel says, “Never borrow from the future. If you worry about what may happen tomorrow and it doesn’t happen, you have worried in vain. Even if it does happen, you have to worry twice.”
Comment by Bill Briggs February 22, 2008 @ 6:18 am1. Pray
2. Go to bed on time.
3. Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed.
4. Say No to projects that won’t fit into your time schedule, or that will compromise your mental health.
5. Delegate tasks to capable others.
6. Simplify and unclutter your life.
7. Less is more. (Although one is often not enough, two are often too many.)
8. Allow extra time to do things and to get to places.
9. Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time; don’t lump the hard things all together.
10. Take one day at a time.
11. Separate worries from concerns . If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety . If you can’t do anything about a situation, forget it.
12. Live within your budget; don’t use credit cards for ordinary purchases.
13. Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc.
14. K.M.S. (Keep Mouth Shut). This single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble.
15. Do something for the Kid in You everyday.
16. Carry a Bible with you to read while waiting in line.
17. Get enough rest.
18. Eat right.
19 Get organized so everything has its place.
20. Listen to a tape while driving that can help improve your quality of life.
21. Write down thoughts and inspirations.
22. Every day, find time to be alone.
23. Having problems? Talk to God on the spot. Try to nip small problems in the bud. Don’t wait until it’s time to go to bed to try and pray.
24. Make friends with Godly people.
25. Keep a folder of favorite scriptures on hand.
26. Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good “Thank you Jesus .”
27. Laugh.
28. Laugh some more!
29. Take your work seriously, but not yourself at all.
30. Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can).
31. Be kind to unkind people (they probably need it the most).
32. Sit on your ego.
33 Talk less; listen more.
34. Slow down.
35. Remind yourself that you are not the general manager of the universe.
36 . Every night before bed, think of one thing you’re grateful for that you’ve never been grateful for before. GOD HAS A WAY OF TURNING THINGS AROUND FOR YOU.
“If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Greetings Gary and Patty,
Comment by Pete & Connie Bonjour February 22, 2008 @ 6:44 pmSounds like you are making progress – hooray! We are praying for you and we’ll be praying for that “going home” date especially.
Not a lot of news out this way – looking forward to spring, warmer weather and less snow. A week ago Thursday Pete went to work at the depot after 24 inches of snow fell overnight. He and a friend shoveled out the gov’t vehicles. The wind had drifted snow up to their hoods. Lots of work. Pete slept in the next day until 7:00 am – that is quite a record for him as he wakes up between 4 & 5 am every day of the week.
We love you both – God Bless!! Connie
To a Man long well known
As a Rock of the Earth
So Steady and strong
Set right from your birth
Now challenges flare
And suffering upon you
Not easy to bear
Such burden and stress
Sooooo . . . I’m wont to express
One thing that is true:
No matter how tough
Its not tougher than you.
Keep taking the challenge
One day at a time
Like the beat of your drum
Hold His power in Mind.

Randy, This is the time to activate the taste buds. Jump starting with jalapeno peppers is the answer. Oh yes, first coat the stomach lining with ???? After eating a few of those, Gary’s taste buds will think everything is tastier.
Comment by Joan Hartman February 29, 2008 @ 7:33 amGary your hospital food and taste buds must be like Gods people and the manna. After the long TRIAL on the long trail. So Gary eat that Manna for the blessings of Crappie, Bass, Bluegills, deer stakes, strawberries and walken in the garden across that little ditch (river) is on the way. Friends in Christ Doug & Eddie
Comment by Doug & Eddie February 29, 2008 @ 9:42 amGary: Happy leap day!!! One extra day for you to practice swallowing and eating. I know if I had to eat a hard boiled egg I would not find it very tasty either. Thanks to Patti, Randy and Alicia for keeping us informed on your progress. I try and check in a couple times a week. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Will try and see you this summer when I’m in Savanna. Take care and follow everyone’s advice so you can get home soon. God speed.

Hi Gary,
It may be time for you to start planning your garden and selecting your favorites for this Spring. March 1st is here and the birds will be singing and nature will awaken soon. Easter is early this year and we shall be centered again. We pray you will be able to take in more than enough nourishment very soon so that you can be strong in body, as well as mind and spirit.
Remember…
God has not promised skies always blue,
flower-strewn pathways all our lives through,
God has not promised sun without rain,
joy without sorrow, peace without pain,
But God has promised strength for the day,
rest for the labor, light for the way,
grace for the trials, help from above,
unfailing sympathy, undying love.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
Love,

Did you have much snow? We had hardly any here. Praise the Lord. But, as I was walking to my car on the skating rink this morning, down I went. Right on my knee and my left hand. Now, I am sitting with my feet up doing homework. God bless laptops. Still praying here. Keep up the good job on updating, I can see our prayers being answered.

Randy…smuggle this to Gary…….
High in Protein Chia seed is a complete source of dietary protein, providing all the essential amino acids. Compared to other seeds and grains, chia seed provides the highest source of protein, between 19 to 23 percent protein by weight. One of the unique qualities of the chia seed is its ability to absorb more than nine times its volume in water or other liquid. This ability can prolong hydration and retain electrolytes in body fluids, especially during exertion or exercise. Normal fluid retention ensures electrolyte dispersion across cell membranes, maintains fluid balances, and aids normal cellular function.
Source of Fiber
Chia seed produces a thick mucilage in water, absorbing up to 30 times its weight in water. This soluble fiber cleans the intestines by binging and transporting debris from the intestinal walls so that it can be eliminated efficiently and regularly. A daily dose of chia seed provides an excellent fiber source and most people notice a different in less than a week.
Energy/Antioxidants and no Gluten
Chia contains the usual Vitamin C, ferulates and Vitamin E but the real secret is the Cinnamic acids that guard the omega-3 oils from oxidation. This is why chia is a stable product for years! With no gluten, virtually no sodium, nor reported allergic reactions, grown without pesticides or toxicants. Chia has a high energy to weight ratio (more than wheat, corn, rice or oats) that makes it a favorite choice of long distance runners and other athletics .

We’re praying so hard for you. Your name is in our bulletin every Sunday for people to pray for. You’re loved by so many my dear friend. God Bless You.
Comment by Bill and Nancy March 19, 2008 @ 7:35 amBill and Nancy
Dear Gary,
You know I have personally shared with you that I have prayed for people but never been much of a church goer. I want you to know that my husband and were introduced to Grace Episcopal Church in Sterling. We have been going to a group on Wednesday nights are are studying “The Prayer of Jabez”. We have also been going to church on Sundays for the past two months. Now I know what we have been missing all these years! I know how strong your faith is and how much you love your “church family”. I say a prayer for you and your family every day! I have put you on OUR prayer list at Grace Church. Because of the kindness in your heart and your character, I know YOU always pray for and are concerned for others. I know it may feel selfish but in our class we have learned that God wants us to prayer for ourselves! He is our father and you need to pray for you this time Gary!!!! On a personal note, I think because of your health I am even more driven to find that same relationship you have with God and please remember that I have kept you and your family in my prayers! God Speed. Love you Gary…your pal, Mary
Comment by Mary Sue Shull March 19, 2008 @ 5:40 pmGary, You need to stop playing the game of musical hospital rooms. Shut your radio off and stay in one room till you can come home. Were praying that will be soon. love and prayers from the Friederich’s

Comment by Bill Briggs March 20, 2008 @ 4:59 amGary- Just got an update this morning from Kari Schmidt and she mentioned your website. I want to send along my thoughts and prayers to you and your family. I think of you often and think all the things that everyone does–why do such bad things happen to such good people who still have so much to give? I have to believe it is all part of God’s plan for you to be in all of our lives in just this way. As much as possible, we walk this journey with you but know that Jesus Christ is by your side and perhaps, asking the same questions we are. Take care, Gary. You do the healing, we’ll do the praying.
Comment by Carol Novak March 20, 2008 @ 12:56 pmCarol
ALRIGHT!!! Let’s get him home! I know Sarah said she is going to be out at your house for a while when Gary comes home, I also know that she has to work, so if you would like or if needed I can come over when she is at work, or for that matter when ever you need! Being at home all the time I can be there when ever you need, Sarah has my number USE IT. Know that I’m here as well as my family. Can’t wait to see you home again. Get better.

Gary, we miss you and love you at LSSI! Hang in there! Love your pal, Mary

Comment by Doug & Eddie March 25, 2008 @ 2:15 pmGary, You have got to stop letting the doctors treat you as a yo-yo. Bouncing you all over the place. Easing out the line and then pulling you back in. Break the string and head for home. There are lots of us who would cover your tracks so the Dr.(s) couldn’t get their hands on you again. (I was going to compare you to musical chairs but Ward and Janell beat me to it.) We got to spend some time with the grandchildren, Savanna and Kipp Jr., and they are as different as night and day. I know you are both looking forward to your first little one like we were. Love and prayers continue for you both, Russ and Joan

Hi Gary: Remember our DCFS days. Just talked to Pastor Moe ( who is now our pastor in Rock Falls). Putting you on our prayer list. Sharing this information with Florence Pennington, too. We are all praying for you . Will keep up on your progress to share with others.
Comment by Bonnie Brotheridge March 31, 2008 @ 3:06 pmDoesn’t recovery time stink? You never thought it could be so bad and still live. I remember thinking, “If this is living, then take me home dear Jesus.” Then the doctors come in to tell you “You’re getting better and will continue to do so if you just… (do whatever they saying).
Comment by Mike Meyer April 2, 2008 @ 10:46 amAnd all you can think is, “Yeah, right. Just leave me alone.” Going down to death’s door hurts. What no one tells you is that recovering and regaining your health hurts too. It feels like the same old pain, the same weakness that was sucking the life out of you. But that’s not what it is. All the tests say you are getting better. So why all the pain and fatigue? Because you are forcing muscles and organs to get back into shape. Why are the first few days of football practice so horrible and people are throwing up? Because they’re out of shape. They are a long way from game-day condition. Why would any player put themselves through that? Why? So they can get back into the game! Eat right and exercise right. It’s the only way to get into shape. And as you get in better shape, the pain and misery fades away. Part of this battle is in your head. Quit making excuses and do it. The rest is spiritual. God has obviously left you here to bring Him glory. How are you going to do that today? If there was ever a time “No pain, no gain” was true, it’s now. So you gotta keep telling yourself, “I’m hurting because I’m getting better. Praise God!” And then get up and walk two more steps than you did last time. Do two more exercises than last time. Two more bites than last time. With each small victory, we all praise God. And He is glorified through you. It’s time to see your footprints in the sand too.
Praying you through it,
Mike
Congrats on coming back to the good side of the River!
Comment by Beth April 2, 2008 @ 2:17 pmI’d rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy. Someone here in Savanna, Illinois needs your wisdom, wit and advice. Come home soon.

Hi Patty,
Comment by Mary April 13, 2008 @ 12:02 pmThank you for keeping everyone upto date. Last night I was cleaning out some drawers and found a picture of gary and the youth services group on one of our summer day trips to castle rock park. I smiled remembering how much fun we had and how Gary was always a great teacher of the outdoors! The upsetting part for me was thinking how unhappy he must be in a contained environment. I know for Gary it must be like keeping Daniel Boone out of the woods! Please know that I pray for you and Gary and your family everyday. I am now a believer that God works in mysterious ways. I know it seems like babysteps for Gary but I also know God is with all of you!. Please tell Gary I said hello and that I was thinking of him! I check the site daily and I appreciate you keeping it up through all of your own stress during the days, nights, weeks. God Bless Sincerely, Mary Sue Shull
Good to see you the other night. Thanks for letting us do part of our Church Board meeting in your room. Next time we all come we are going to bring a favorite food from each of us for you to sample…

Comment by Beth April 14, 2008 @ 1:00 pmPatty,
Need any help with your garden this year? My house is still too small for a garden! :)
-Beth
I think spring is waiting for you, Gary. The grass is turning green and buds are on the trees but no farmers in the field and no flowers blooming yet. Our snow crocuses are up but no blooms. Have seen some robins getting some big night crawlers out of the ground and we have had our lakeside home due to the Plum River being out of its banks but spring is still slowly finding its way here. We will be seeing Kipp, Laura and Kipp Jr this weekend. You are going to love being a grandpa. It’s the best. In closing the song says….” and step by step He’ll lead me all the days of my life” Take those steps as the Lord leads. Joan
Comment by Joan Hartman April 16, 2008 @ 6:34 amHi Gary,
I want you to know that you and your family continue every Sunday to be listed in our prayer bulletin. I keep them updated on your progress and know that you are in our closing prayers. Gary we miss you at work and you are always brought up in conversation. We all love you and are praying for you to return home soon. Please hurry home so we can come and visit you! Your pal, Mary
Comment by Mary April 16, 2008 @ 8:52 pmGarry, I am sorry to hear that you are not very happy right now. I wish you would think about all the fun times we had in youth group and Sunday School. Please remember those times so you can get better and come home. I am glad that you are closer to us now. Remember that your God is a God of love and laughter, even through the pain. Remember Job and all his struggles, and yet God restored him tenfold. I love you and am praying for you.

Gary, I got together yesterday with a bunch of people from LSSI-Lois Hoover, Audrey Wright, Lea Ebens, Beth Chase, David Mueller, Cindy Gerdes– They all send their wishes and prayers to you. The gold fish lived through the winter and are swimming around eating bread crums. We had at least six very large dead frogs on the bottom of the pond. Why?
So…let’s get started. You tell me what to do.

Know that you are in my daily prayers! You have many friends who may not see you as often as we would hope to but who always have you close to our hearts and you are always on our minds! It was so warm today and I got red mowing the lawn. I remember when we took the kids on summer activities to the pool you would wear your big floppy hat and scolded me about being in the sun! I hope you come home soon and that you have brighter days ahead! Love ya Gary, Mary
Hi Gary and Patty,
Comment by Nancy April 21, 2008 @ 7:06 amThanks for updating us Patty. You are a very strong woman. Gary kind of reminds me of the minister who was injured in the terrible crash in the book “90 minutes in Heaven.” He too went through a lot of pain, rehabilitation, and lots of depression, lots, but eventually came out of it not as the same person, but a better person. Gary, our prayers are with you daily, nightly prayers before we close our eyes, morning prayers, and many thoughts of you throughout the day which I know the good LOrd hears. Patty, I enjoyed our little visit at the grocery store a few weeks ago, what a beautiful surprise it was to see you! Hang in there Gary. God bless you, Patty, and your four wonderful children.
Nancy and Bill
well, there is always books to read and the internet to browse. Plus the radio and the news, and of course friends and family will be there to visit him. And a grandbaby to prepare for! He could re-read parenting books. lol :-) Tell them no to worry that he will probably just enjoy sitting outside and soaking up the sun and nature for the first time in months. Can’t wait to see you again.

Dear Gary: Mary Shull has written to post me on your circumstances. How saddened I am to learn that you have been struggling so, first with the illness and now with an attendant sadness. As a clinician you’ll recall that depressions always end; it’s just a matter of waiting them out. And in a case like yours, where it is a function of your circumstances, your normal vigorous baseline of high good health should precisely be what you bounce back to, once the impact of the illness and chemotherapy have lessened. In short, fishing and gardening!
In Matt 14 Jesus feeds the 5000 by the lake and then heads out in a boat “to the other side.” The disciples follow, are caught in a fierce wind and battered by the waves. They are scared. Jesus, who had gone ahead to land, comes back for them, walking on the water. Peter calls out, “Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water.” Jesus says, “Come,” and Peter sets out. But Peter grew afraid when he saw the wind and the waves, and, taking his eyes off Jesus, he begins to sink. Matthew has it, “Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him.”
That is what you are about, Gary. Getting to the other side…of this illness and of its attendant sadness. In the process, there are going to be wind and waves. We’re safe, as long as we can keep our eyes on Jesus. Even able to walk on water! But, of course, we can’t. We become more mindful of what’s against us then what, and who, is for us. But it is the gracious will of our God to do the needful thing…”Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him.”
In short, really doesn’t matter whether or not you can keep your eyes on Jesus when the wind and waves are up. He’s got his eyes on you, knows where you are, and will get you safely to the other side.
On another note, the single best autobiographical work I ever read on depression was William Styron’s “Darkness Visible”. He really seems to get it.
You are in our prayers. Better, God’s holding you close, wont let you go down. So, take as much time as you need to heal. Just mend well!
Best,

Comment by Beth April 22, 2008 @ 2:06 pmYou did it! Both of you together. Head north till you reach home. I know Gary needs some activity but bird watching, listening to the sounds of nature and drinking in God’s beautiful creation in your own backyard will be a start. That recliner that you won on Paula Sands Live is waiting for you. Nestle in and enjoy. I’m sure we can dig up some old magnetized fish from the Awana Fun Fair for Gary to cast the special fishing pole and try to snag those fish from a wading pool. Got to get that casting arm back in shape. Welcome home. Russ and Joan

God Bless you, Gary and his family. You have been in my prayers and will continue to be through this difficult time. All of Gary’s colleagues at LSSI are better in so many ways for knowing him.
Comment by judy nettz May 9, 2008 @ 8:51 amDespite circumstances, Gary is simply awaiting permission to take that step forward to rejoin those he loved before and to prepare for those he loves now. Though sorrowful tears are shed at this difficult time, think of how many anxiously anticipate his return. God bless you Gary. I love that boyish smile. An anonymous classmate.
Comment by Anonymous May 9, 2008 @ 10:02 amDear Gary and Family,
I am praying for you Gary. I love you brother! I am reminded of Proverbs 3: 5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths.”
Vicki, Noah, Chloe and I will be praying for you all.

Comment by Chris Simcox May 9, 2008 @ 10:02 amWHAT!!!!!! :( I check this website nightly and on Wednesday I headed to West Frankfort, IL. to celebrate my grandma’s 80th birthday. I just checked the website and I am experiencing a wide range of feelings. Anger…..Sadness…..Anger! Gary inspired me through his faith in God and the love of his family, his outlook on life. I am just sorry that I didn’t get a chance to visit with Gary and I hope he realizes how much he meant to me as a colleague and friend the past 15 years at LSSI. Today my thoughts are with you and Gary. I’m so very sorry…….
Comment by Mary Sue Shull May 9, 2008 @ 10:07 amHello to Gary and his family. I had the biggest crush on Gary back in Kindergarten. It makes me smile when I think about it. Sorry I haven’t kept in touch.
Comment by Tina Terry Schmitz May 9, 2008 @ 10:27 amWhen I interviewed Gary so many years ago, I was instantly drawn to his unique style, his compassion and his good sense. I pretty much left him to his own devices up there in Carroll County and while some of the stories I heard got a little wild, he never disappointed. Little did any of us know the incredible number of lives he would touch (and probably continues to touch) throughout his life. His integrity, his faith, his caring and loyalty and his unbridled passion to serve kids and families and, in particular, his own wife and children–Gary will not be forgotten because he lives on in all those lives he touched. It is an honor to have known him. I wish him peace.

Comment by Ben Withhart May 9, 2008 @ 10:36 pmA very sad day for all of us. Gary was a special guy. Hard to type as all choked up…I will miss my friend.
love.Ben
I wanted to leave a final post after this past year…..Yesterday, we lost one of the kindest souls I have ever had the pleasure of working with and knowing. Not only was Gary a mentor to the children and families he worked with but he taught me a few things over the years as a colleague that my own father never had the time to do…how to climb the Makoqeta caves, how to canoe and find my way around if lost, how to hike and which green leaves to avoid, how to fish, and ways to interact and resolve crisis by throwing away the textbook theories. Gary and fellow co-worker, Terry Bocker, showed me how to really work with the children/families by listening to them and just treating them as we would want to be treated…with respect and human kindness. Mostly, he inspired me through his faith in God and the importance of family. Throughout this journey, I started going back to church and had found a sense of peace that I know Gary had with his faith and relationship with God. Gary did touch many lives and I am so happy to have had a small part in his. Words cannot express how much of an impact he made on my life and how deeply he will be missed! God bless you and I hope he eases your pain! SO LONG MY FRIEND, GARY “BON JOVI”, thanks for the memories and may your spirit live on in those lives you touched! Love, Mary
Comment by Mary Sue Shull May 10, 2008 @ 6:06 amMr. Gary, it hit me just now that I will have to wait til I go to my heavenly home to see you again. This will not be easy on your family because I feel you have made me a part of your family, and as a part of your family I already miss you greatly. You taught me christianity with compassion and patience. You have touched me in way that will last the rest of my days. Love Casey

I met Gary in the seventies and was looking for day care that was reliable. We became friends and he spent much time with my son Ray through-out the years. I have had many struggles in my lifetime and they have been for the most part successful because Gary helped clear my path a little and opened the door to God for me. He is one of the first Godly men that I have met in my life. He is still helping the Lord.
Comment by Linda Hergert-Comeau May 13, 2008 @ 9:42 amI met gary as a troubled youth that felt the world was against me. I had been let down so much by the men in my life I had no trust for any. Then I met Gary someone who truely cared about being true, sincere, and caring. There were no bad motives. I have always respected him so much and am so gratefull to have had him in my troubled times to help walk me through them. He was a wonderful man that I will miss and wish I could have told him how much he ment to me while he was here. Gary made his life making a differnce in other people’s. He really made a difference in mine. Thank you Gary
Comment by AUSTIN DEAN PROWANT May 13, 2008 @ 12:03 pmI first met Gary when I worked at Sinnissippi Center in Mt. Carroll and he was at Chestnut Park School. I always admired his strong faith and the creative ways he would “sneak” talk of God into a conversation. I haven’t seen Gary since I left that job in 2005, but will always remember his love for the clients that he worked with and his dedication to his Lord. My condolences to Patty and the rest of his family.

Comment by Mary Sue Shull May 14, 2008 @ 9:50 pmI am sorry that I had to meet you after all of my years working with Gary, under these circumstances. Gary’s funeral was really beautiful. Thank you for allowing all of us to share this moment with you and to let us show you how much he was loved. The toughest times are ahead of you, wishing he was physically here to see the new grandbaby, holidays, but after today, I see even more clearly that he indeed will be with you in spirit! As I shared, LSSI is going to have Gary on the newsletter to celebrate his life and remember his dedication to our agency. We felt he should be honored in such a manner even though his own satisfaction alone came from working with his LSSI friends & the families he served the past 26 years. I will search for my pictures of our summer trips with the kids. We had many funny pictures! I am sure you would like to show them to your grandchildren someday! He truly was an inspiration to many! God Bless and much love. Mary Sue Shull
Gary,
I know you are in a better place. I met you first when I was in the 4th or 5th grade. You understood me better than the teachers, principals or anyone there would even care to try knowing. You were there for me whenever I needed it. I thank you for that. I am going to miss you but as long as your in a better place with god I am happy.
Thank you for being there for me all those years.
Love always,

It’s really tough for all of us to loose Gary, but we all know that he is in a better place now. Growing up together through grade school and high school we were the best of friends. During grade school we spent as much time together as possible camping, fishing and plinking with our BB guns. Gary always had fishing stories to tell me of the trips that Jean and Glen took Randy and him on to Tomahawk, Wisconsin. It was one of Gary’s favorite spots and the walleye fishing was always great there. Being a great fisherman, he was always trying to teach me how to fish, but never succeeded. Once, while camping out in the back yard, we got up before sun up to go fishing on Bimm’s lake. We wheeled my little 10’ flat boat down there on a little two wheel cart along with all of the tackle that Gary thought we needed. We didn’t catch a thing but had a great time anyway just being together on the water. He had a great laugh at my expense when we decided to push through a little creek that used to connect to Plum River on the back side of the lake. As I was standing up at the back of the boat working it under a low limb, I lost my balance and went backward, head first into that shallow creek as Gary went flying in the boat out into Plum River. He almost fell out of the boat laughing. In high school, we were into re-loading our shotgun shells and did lots of hunting and trap shooting with Randy, Ben Withhart, and Calvin Lego. We were always experimenting with different loads and wad combinations, even a few black powder loads to have fun with while shooting trap. Gary tried to teach me how to hunt ducks one time just north of Riverview before it was turned into a preserve. We waded way out into the lily pads with our shot guns to wait for teal to fly over. Gary gave me a few instructions before the first one flew in and I carefully took the first shot. Unfortunately I had mistakenly left out the powder from the load and the primer only had enough power for the shot to clear the barrel, landing it about 10’ in front of us in the water. I could have thrown it farther. Again, Gary had a great laugh and couldn’t wait to tell all of our friends about my first duck hunting trip. Since then, I’ve never brought home a duck. As we grew older and left high school, we didn’t see that much of each other due to miles. I headed for SIU in Carbondale and he headed for Freeport and later Winona, MN for school. Later he came to live in Carbondale to work for a security company as a guard, occasionally working at the same JCPenney store that I worked at in the auto center. Once while there, he set me up on a blind date with a girl that worked at the store as a cashier. He didn’t tell her who I was but pointed her out to me so that I would have a heads up. I went through her line three times that day, buying a few odd things just to see what she was like. She saw me taking to Gary by the front doors of the store and later told him that she would rather go out with me than the looser that he had set her up with in the blind date, not knowing that I was the guy. To her surprise, I picked her up for the date and eventually we were married within the year. Thirty five year later, Regina and I still have Gary to thank for introducing us. He was a friend to everyone that he met and will be missed by all.
